Howard and Carroll Counties LGBT Caucus Launched: Join NOW

ACLU and Equality Maryland Sue State for Same Sex Marriage Rights

On July 7, 2004 the ACLU and Equality Maryland joined forces on behalf of 9 gay and lesbian couples and one Maryland man to sue the State of Maryland for same-sex marriage rights. ANOTHER VICTORY: DPBs achieved for Howard Community College

Following the lead of County Executive James Robey, Howard Community College announced on June 3rd that it too would offer same sex domestic partner benefits (DPBs) for employees of Howard Community College. This represents another accomplishment of the PFLAG Columbia/Howard County Chapter's advocacy group.

Robey Approves DPBs for Howard County

County Executive James Robey, responding to advocacy efforts from PFLAG Columbia/Howard County and county employees, approved offering Domestic Partner Benefits for Howard County employees. Robey demonstrated both sound business acumen and his sense of fairness in making same sex health benefits available.

Attempts to Write Marriage Discrimination into Maryland Constitution Fail Again

We had a great legislative session in 2006 by stopping repeated attempts to pass a Constitutional Amendment that would have banned marriage equality and would have codified discrimination into our Maryland Constitution. Thank-you for all of your efforts.

House Defeats Federal Marriage Amendment

In a sound defeat, moderate and conservative Republicans joined Democrats and one Independent in opposing the Marriage Protection Amendment (previously the Federal Marriage Amendment) on the floor of the House of Representatives. The Senate also killed the amendment making ratification impossible this year. More Info...

Senate Defeats Federal Marriage Amendment

The Senate voted down the Federal Marriage Amendment. This proposed amendment was a 2006 mid-term election year Republican tactic to invigorate the Radical Christian Right and attempt to write discrimination into the U.S. Constitution banning same-sex marriage. Please write Senators Mikulski and Sarbanes and thank them for their votes against the Federal Marriage Amendment Act.
